Engine, Transmission, and Performance
The new Wrangler base engine is a V6 Pentastar, which
generates 285 horsepower. It provides more than enough acceleration and
power. The eTorque system (mild-hybrid) comes as an option of the V6
engine, and it boosts torque when accelerating.
For a better and livelier performance, choose the optional
turbocharged 4-cylinder, which makes 270 horsepower. Though the
powertrain has less horsepower, it has 35 more pound-feet of torque,
making a difference in low-speed acceleration. Besides, the engine has
more power on highway driving.
Also, the V6 diesel is available with excellent handling
capabilities. The engine features a 6-speed manual transmission and the
available smooth-shifting 8-speed automatic (standard with other
powertrains).
The base engine acquires 20/24 miles per gallon in the
city/highway. You can also opt for a turbo-4, which improves to 22/24
mpg (city/highway). The optional diesel powertrain rates best in the
2021 Wrangler lineup with 22/29 miles per gallon (city/highway).
Something worth noting, the plug-in model will be the most efficient. It
will acquire 50 mpg when rolling on electric power.
